Sociology : Would publishing creative content online be typically male ?

The Internet users put more and more their own artistic productions online. With an advantage for men, who dare to expose themselves more on the Web.

Being connected to the Internet is not enough. It is also necessary to know how to use the tools of the Web and not to be afraid to publish content. Especially when the Internet user works in art, or produces creative content. A study conducted by a team of researchers from Northwestern University has shown that there are disparities between men and women when it comes to putting content online. On average, one in three men who work in photography, writing, video or music put their productions online. A figure that drops to less than half when it comes to women who have the same activities as part of their studies or their job. “So while artistic creation is equally divided between men and women, it turns out that sharing this content online is not,” comments Eszter Hargittai, author of the study.

Male voices are better represented

The survey included more than 1,000 recent graduates of the University of Illinois. The result: three-fifths of the respondents said they were engaged in creative activity, and more than half of those creators said they had posted at least one of their productions online. “Sharing information on the Internet is now a form of participation in public culture. It is a way of contributing to the common discourse,” says the researcher. “Yet it seems that male voices are more vocal than female ones!”. According to the researchers, one explanation for the observed gender difference is users’ perceptions of their online skills. It would seem that women see in the technological tool an obstacle to their expression on the web.

Generation X was born in the 60s and 70s. Generation Y flourished at the end of the 20th century. Today, the visual generation is here. What is this “generation V”? A cohort of Internet users who no longer understand the world through text, but through images. An army of digital natives who search the web via visuals, logos, thumbnails, photos. The systems are almost perfected. A photo taken with a mobile device can lead to a commercial site or will launch a search in an index such as Google, Yahoo or Exalead.

A typed query will bring up in the results window a set of thumbnails of the corresponding sites. All that is missing is a technical link, and the images will be able to send us pictures. This has already started, and our friends from L’Atelier Asie are already experimenting with it: a photographed object can bring back in its digital nets all the other photos that look like it… Add to this laboratory techniques to capture images seen – or imagined – by a human, and you get a system where the simple thought makes you display on a screen images of the same graphic universe.

A different web design

Generation V is a legion of eyes that know how to navigate on video portals whose graphic design – it’s a more than thirty-year-old hypermetropic astigmatic who writes – seems to have been given to perverted ophthalmologists. Eyes for whom the entry page of 6 billion Others is already information in itself.
